Scott Cook Photography: Branding & Business Card

Scott Cook Photography: Branding & Business CardHere’s a slight departure from my norm: branding and a business card. My friend Scott Cook told me he was agonizing over designing his card, so I took it on as a fun side project. It’s so refreshing to leverage a no-pressure creative experience and help others shine in the process.

Mograph Overload via Three Legged Legs – in 1080p!

3llnasaCheck out this psychidelic surrealist music video for N.A.S.A. It has got to be one of the most intensely layered and collaged motion graphics pieces I have ever seen. You can watch it here or download it in 1080p HD (the first time I’ve seen such an offering for this sort of work). WARNING: The HD download is over 4oomb. Also check out the case study, which is loaded with previs and animatics.

Trend Alert: intentional video artefacting. I’ve seen creative uses of this digital distortion gaining in use over the past few months, and this video is loaded with it.

Surveillance Chic

In keeping with my “behind the curve” movie consumption, I just finished up Body of Lies. While I love Ridley Scott’s directorial work (Alien holds my top spot for cinematography and art direction), this story wasn’t as tense or exciting as I’d hoped. And even though it’s been done many times before, I’m still a sucker for techy, glitchy title treatments – which Body of Lies gave me a little dose of shortly after the film’s opening sequence. There’s so much aberrant visual information packed into each video frame that I can’t help but carefully click through each one to see what’s there.

In Development: Rhaq Typeface (I Say It “Rock”)

rhaq
One of my goals for 2008 was to design a typeface. I never did. Last week I was inspired by a German poster I saw on eBay, so I decided to create a typeface based on a couple of the characters I found interesting. This is my first go at it, so if anyone has any tips I’d love to hear them. I’ve currently got a bunch of characters in hand, so I will post more as it develops. Not too long after I started out I realized that this shares some traits with the capitals of Microgramma, which has long been a favorite of mine. Most likely this experiment will end up with a quirky result, but sometimes that’s what makes display faces so much fun.

Digup.tv Drops Rob Chiu + Chris Hewitt Interviews

ronin

This is an awesome interview with two top-shelf, independent motion designers. Listening to these guys proves that heart and vision take you way farther than big budgets and lifeless technical mastery. Oh, and Digup.tv is super fresh – it’s sure to become a staple of mine.  Check it.

3Destruction T-Shirt for Hurley Design Contest

driftminer-final-hurley

Some friends hit me up about a t-shirt contest that Hurley is having, and I don’t usually do apparel, but I figured I’d give it a go. The prize is $5k and/or an all-expense paid trip to a Hurley fashion event in Cali. I ended up having a lot of fun designing this – still graphics are always a fresh departure. You should register and help me win by voting for it here!

The Crisis of Credit Visualized

Just watched this awesome infographics piece called “The Crisis of Credit Visualized.” It was created by Johnathan Jarvis as part of his thesis project at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. I think it does a great job of breaking down such a complex economic issue while keeping things entertaining.  There’s a massive HD version available as well. The only thing I’m not too keen on is the acidic bright green that’s used throughout – it’s a bit hard on the eyes. A minor complaint for such a great piece. Check it out!
